Ancient family secret hair care tips.

November 23rd, 2007

This is a continuation of my general yesterdays rant. I don’t want to bore any one, but with extensive research I’ve managed to get a list of good tips to use for hair care and you can try them out and let me know how they worked on you. So here goes,

  1. Coconut oil massages which are really smelly but seem to work on my once curly hair. Rub in the oil and then leave on overnight .Wash off with warm water early in the morning. Pretty good results, really nice warm coco nutty smell as well.
  2. Choose the best habits for maintaining your hair. Ok so this may sound silly but it’s true. Good habits include no smoking, a healthy balanced diet with extra calcium and at least three glasses of water per day.
  3. Pamper your hair at least once a week and get your stylist to note down a list of hair care products which you can use regularly at home.
  4. Jojoba oil is also pretty good for healthy hair. Warm it slightly and rub with a cotton pad into the roots, leave on for an hour then wash off with the Reetha shampoo I mentioned in the earlier article.
  5. Mash an avocado with mayonnaise and use as a conditioning pack .I used half an avocado (ate the remaining) and about a teaspoon of mayo, pretty good results with soft lustrous hair and good shine. Really liked this one.

Although these may seem like pretty humdrum hair care tips ,I vaguely remember my mother making her own shampoo and conditioner at home with herbal products.

Give me a few days and I’ll try to cajole the secret out of her. She doesn’t really like me after I published the Reetha shampoo and yoghurt/egg/vinegar tip on the net. Family secrets, you see!

Let’s wait and watch. She might simmer down in a few days. Meanwhile watch this space!

Home remedies for dandruff.

November 19th, 2007

Itch, Itch scratch, Itch, scratch! That’s how a person with dandruff usually behaves but that not how you have to be. The irritating flakes of dandruff can really drive a person nuts. But with regular control, it can be a problem of the past. Here are a few common herbal remedies, which I tried out for your use.

  • Aloe vera gel-I do not know about you but aloe vera gel is all around so sticky that rubbing it on my head was too nasty to contemplate! Nevertheless, it helped my dandruff for about a day and a half and then back came my dandruff!
  • Reetha-reetha is an Indian berry, which is soapy to use. The powder of the berry is commonly used to rinse hair instead of water and shampoo. This was great, made my hair soft and manageable and gave it a good shine too. But didn’t really work on my dandruff.
  • Chickpea flour mixed with egg and lemon-awful pong, and if you do not wash well, watch out for the nasty comments! But pretty good on the hair and really killing on the dandruff.
  • Henna mixed with lemon juice and vinegar- this was the best. Lovely burgundy high lights combined with high-shine glossy manageable hair for at least ten days. But, unfortunately, dandruff came slowly creeping back.
  • This one is the best. Water, old yoghurt, vinegar and salt rubbed into the scalp and washed off after an hour. Repeat once a month. Yucky smell, but good results on the hair, as well as, dandruff. Regular use has managed to keep the dandruff completely at bay.

Any one who wants the specific recipe can write into me. But believe me people, it really does work!
